People have an excuse for everything.
I went to high school with a girl who everybody referred to as Colorado Girl. I don't even know what her real name is. Anyway, everyone called her Colorado Girl because years after she transferred to our school, she still countered everything that was done or said with, Well
in Colorado... Annoying as it was, people accepted it and didn't argue with her.
I've realized that a lot of demographics can and do use Colorado Girl excuses for their screw-ups, regardless of whether said demographic affects them in everyday life. For example, the fair-haired can pass off mistakes as blonde moments in spite of their IQ and freshmen can wear their dorm keys conveniently around their neck on a lanyard to only moderate heckling.Since none of the more obvious excuses seem to fit me, I have found my own disclaimer to use in Athens. In true Colorado Girl fashion, I simply say, I'm an out-of-stater.
For one thing, I'm pretty bad at cornhole. As a matter of fact, I didn't even know what cornhole was until I came to Ohio a year ago. Turns out we have the same game in Pennsylvania, but I never once heard anyone call it cornhole. Either way, if I fail miserably at the beanbag toss, people can accept it because I'm an innocent out-of-stater who has never heard of the game.
Another thing that I wasn't aware of before is the Buckeye phenomenon. Last year, I made the mistake of going to Buffalo Wild Wings on a game day ' coincidentally, the day Ohio State University football team lost to Illinois. When I remained apathetic after the loss, I got the rude looks, until I reassured everyone that I'm an out-of-stater. I just wouldn't understand.
In all fairness, I'm not really so different from you Ohioans. I only live three hours away in Pittsburgh ' we measure distance in units of time just like you! We also call it pop not soda, and we have a lot of towns and rivers with names that no one but us can pronounce correctly.
Regardless of the fact that I probably just blew my cover, I will most likely be pulling the out-of-stater card for the rest of my time here. If it does nothing but get me a free pass in cornhole, it's done its job.
