All of the Above: South Green resident challenges others to 'walk mile' in her boot

If you currently live or have ever lived in a dorm behind the Front Four on South Green, this week's column is for you.

Last year, I didn't envy you ' in fact, I laughed at you. I lived in Shively Hall. I had a dining hall and grab 'n' go two floors beneath my feet, and I never had to walk the entirety of Morton Hill. Ever. But this year, things changed.

After a slew of housing fiascoes, I ended up living in Armbruster House this year. For those who aren't familiar with the jungles of South Green, Armbruster is behind Weld House, which is behind Fenzel House, which is behind Nelson Commons. Simply put, Armbruster House is in Guam.

My first three days in Guam, I got lost almost every time I left or attempted to enter my building. I somehow always found myself dumbfounded in front of Brough House or spinning in a confused daze around the fountain platform near my complex. But finally, I got my bearings.

Of course, as soon as I thought I had South Green down ' last Friday, to be exact ' I found myself in the Cat Cab driving to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital to treat a sprained ankle gone awry. When I got dropped off back at Armbruster, I had an industrial-strength medical boot on my left leg and less dignity than before I left. My boot is the definition of karma.

Let me tell you, you haven't walked anywhere until you've walked there in a knee-high boot with six Velcro straps. My boot can take down large tree branches as if they were twigs and crush baby toes like bugs. However, my boot is also difficult to maneuver over curbs, stairs and holes. As large and lumbering as it may be, I feel like I have to be the daintiest person alive while wearing it or I risk breaking bones (mine or other people's). Going to class may as well be going on safari.
