Tired of the bland noise that rock music has turned into, Ty Owen and Brian Jackson, also known as Donner Party Dinner Party, decided to make some noise of their own.
I love experimental music because it lets me do anything I want to do and the only expectations are you have to do interesting things
Owen said. Rock 'n' roll has gotten so sterile I mean how many bands do I want to listen to that sound like The Rolling Stones or Pavement or Guided By Voices?
Using drum machines, synthesizers and pedals, Donner Party Dinner Party creates noise and drone music similar to bands such as White House and Health.
Some (synthesized) tones are so manipulated that you could never make out what it originally was Owen said. Bands like Wolf Eyes really inspired me to do things like that.
While its music is offbeat, Donner Party Dinner Party does not make apologies to anyone who does not like or understand its music.
The one thing I don't like is people saying is 'I don't get noise music
' because there's nothing to get
its just another form of musical expression
Owen said. Go ahead and hate us
just don't not 'get' us because then you haven't tried to understand us at all.
Their music may be a fringe scene but Owen and Jackson do feel that noise music in Athens is thriving.
I think the noise scene here is awesome
it doesn't get the attention it deserves
Owen said. People are just making music on their own terms
like there is a monthly showcase at ARTS/West
which I think has been going on for at least two years now. I think it's great.
The monthly noise showcase at ARTS/West is hosted by Aquabear Legion, who is also putting on a noise show at The Union this weekend where Donner Party Dinner Party is performing.
On the day of the show, the band's Web site will be up and running with their first release, a live performance of two tracks available for free download.-
