Administrators announced on Monday an agreement with faculty on how to use surplus faculty health care funds, but some faculty senators expressed dissatisfaction.
Faculty asked in the spring that administrators abide by a previous agreement and either leave all surplus funds faculty paid toward health care in the account for future unexpected health costs or return the funds to faculty in a premium holiday ' a break from monthly payments.
Instead, administrators said this week that they will return most of the money to the faculty health care account, but retain some of it to be used elsewhere. The Budget Planning Council will decide where to spend those reserves.
So in other words
the remainder of the surplus is not staying in health care Arts and Sciences Senator Ken Brown said to Kathy Krendl, executive vice president and provost.
I did not say that Krendl replied, repeating her written statement outlining the plan.
After the Faculty Senate meeting where Krendl spoke, Joe McLaughlin, chairman of the senate's Finance and Facilities Committee, said he doesn't trust that the administrators will follow a BPC recommendation. He cited a BPC discussion of employee contributions from 2007 as a precedent saying the president disregarded the committee's report.
If BPC were to support keeping health care surpluses in the health care fund
I don't have confidence that the administration would [honor] that
McLaughlin said.
