Grant money for OU airport will enhance system

Ohio University's Gordon K. Bush airport will receive $231,313 in grant money from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), according to a press release from Sen. George Voinovich (R).

This is just part of the $764,791 that the university-owned, public-use airport will receive for the 2008 fiscal year, said Tony Molinaro, FAA spokesman for the Great Lakes region. The grant money comes from the FAA's Airport Improvement Program, which works to provide funding for airport enhancements regarding safety, maintenance and expansion, he said.

The FAA gives grants directly to the states who then determine how the money is divided up. Molinaro said. A total of $3

218 517 685 in grants has been approved for the 2008 fiscal year.

At Gordon, the money will be used to construct a building to store snow removal equipment, install miscellaneous navigational aids and acquire land for expansion, Molinaro said.

Funding will also be used to install an approach lighting system as an enhancement to the airport's current instrument landing system, said Airport Director Ken Carley.

The new system will allow aircraft to land during times of inclement weather and poor visibility

Carley said. Once it's installed it will make the airport a more valuable asset to both the general public and the university.

Overall

it will make the airport more useful for business

training and research purposes

Carley added.
