Volleyball: Ohio rides momentum to New York

While not exactly formidable on paper, the opponents on the Bobcats' schedule this weekend still pose the threat of an upset.

Ohio (3-3, 0-0 MAC) will face Northeastern, Siena and Syracuse in a two-day stretch at the Big Orange Tournament in Syracuse, N.Y.

After downing Binghamton, Eastern Kentucky and Pittsburgh in a relative mismatch last week, Ohio's focus shifts to their pesky weekend opponents.

This is what they do

coach Ryan Theis said in reference to the offensive strategy of Northeastern. They'll frustrate you all day.

Siena has staggered to an 0-5 start and has only won four out of 18 sets.

Against American on Saturday, Siena was outscored 75-51 and out-blocked 10-1.

Northeastern is just 2-4, but their two sweeps at the beginning of the season show that they can play with anyone.

The Huskies are 0-2 against ranked opponents, falling by sweeps to No. 2 Nebraska and No. 14 Cal Poly.

These teams come from winning backgrounds and programs Theis said. Even though they aren't off to the best starts we know that they can be dangerous.

Known for being a tough home-court team, Syracuse will have the advantage beginning today.

Similarly, the Bobcats haven't won a match against a ranked opponent, going 0-3 after facing three straight Top-12 teams in Hawaii.

While the blockers have stepped up in recent matches, the primary concern for Ohio is taking advantage of opportunities and burying teams when they have the chance.

A high conditioning level spurred the Bobcats over a depleted Pittsburgh team that couldn't adapt to the lack of air conditioning.

Syracuse won their home opener and have won two consecutive matches.

We have to just worry about us first

Theis said. We have to focus on what we're doing as a team

which is generating kills and getting blocks.

Right now, the main focus is on our team and our offense.
