Amateurs to try out their talent at Laughter After Dark

Performing stand-up comedy is nothing new for Matt Karp, but it is for the amateurs he has lined up for Laughter After Dark's performance tonight.

The weekly comedy show rarely hosts an amateur night, but Karp, an Ohio University junior studying video production and the show's host, plans to use the event to diversify the crowd.

We get consistent turnouts at Laughter After Dark

but I want different people to come in Karp said.

For Nick Adams, a senior studying sports management, it's a chance to express his passion for comedy after watching Laughter After Dark earlier this quarter.

I'm a pretty funny guy. In conversations with my friends who know the same references I'm pretty funny

but I just want to see how that translates to an audience I don't know

Adams said.

Jessica Neidhart, 18, a freshman studying journalism, and Adam Bialek, 18, a freshman studying photojournalism, made a bet out of Amateur Night.

We basically signed each other up

Neidhart said. I've never really done anything like this before

so

hopefully

it will be good.

Ideas for stories and jokes are the first steps to stand up. Karp suggested carrying a notebook to write down ideas.

I don't actively say

'Now I'm making sure you write your material down and eat your brussels sprouts

' Karp said.

Stories and jokes developed from real-life situations are more effortless types of humor for amateurs, a strategy Neidhart plans to use.

My family is nuts
