The women's golf team recorded its first top-five finish of the season at the Zippy Invitational in Akron with a final round total of 321 and a fifth-place finish in the 12-team tournament.
The Bobcats were led throughout the event by senior Lindsay Bergman, who recorded her career-best finish, ending up in a tie for 10th place with a 238, her first top-10 finish with the Bobcats.
I tried to keep it simple and think about getting the ball on the fairway
then on the green and then just trying to two-putt Bergman said. I was just thinking about one shot at a time. I committed to what I wanted to do.
Sophomore Jordan Fesh also had a career day. Fesh shot a 76 yesterday which helped her secure 19th place with a 241 and her first top 20 finish.
Fesh said her short game and the work the team put into it helped her shoot as well as she did.
I was putting and chipping very well today, Fesh said.
The Zippy Invitational was the Bobcats' best outing of the season but was also played on the toughest course the team has seen so far
coach Kelly Ovington said.
The Bobcats shot rounds of 327 and 326
respectively
on the first day and lowered their score to 321 on the second day.
Everybody played pretty well and worked hard. We lowered our score today from the previous day. Ovington said. That was one of our goals and we were able to accomplish it.
Bergman said that another team goal was to finish in the top five
which the Bobcats managed to do by moving in front of Mid-American Conference opponent
Toledo.
Ovington said that the team plans to continue to work on the short game.
We are always working on the short game, she said
but we plan to do keep doing what we have been doing because it seems to be working.
The team's next and final fall event will be Oct. 6 when the Bobcats travel to Hurricane
W. Va.
for the Lady Herd Fall Classic.
