Tyler Cantley didn't know what to expect in his first collegiate season.
The freshman came into the season as the Bobcats' highest-rated recruit. He has proven his worth so far, placing third on the team in both of Ohio's meets.
Having these kind of times is surprising
Cantley said. But at the same time it's a good place to start for me.
Cantley had success at the high school level, finishing fifth at last year's Division-II state cross country meet with a time of 15:51. However, the coaches said they never know exactly how runners will handle the competition and distance at the college level.
I had high hopes that he would be able to make that adjustment assistant coach Mitch Bentley said. You're always relieved as a coach when the runners are making that transition well.
Cantley gives his teammates credit for helping him make the transition from high school to college.
Every day in practice
they push me to be the best that I can be
said Cantley. That day
that week
that meet ' they're always there to support me.
Abigail Swift has given the women's team a surprising boost, placing fourth in both of the Bobcats' meets.
(Swift) is really helping to pull the team through right now
Bentley said. We have a large gap that we need to try to fill between our second and third runner
and she's really helping in that regard.
Swift has beaten her previous personal record of 19:42 in both meets this year by one minute. She credits her improvement to the hard work she did during the summer.
I worked really hard this summer
Swift said. I was hoping to get the results
but I wasn't really expecting them.
(Swift) did some hard work over the off-season
