Patty Donahue showed up to practice a half-hour before any of her teammates on Wednesday.
Donahue and the rest of the Bobcats have been taking advantage of individual practice sessions with coach Neil Macmillan.
It's important to ' as much as you can ' get with the coach to help you
she said. I was here working on my hit because that's something I can do by myself. I know what I need to do.
With a coaching staff that totals five (including two undergraduate assistants) and a roster of 20, individual attention isn't always practical.
However, Macmillan pointed out, the team is restricted by a NCAA policy that limits a team's official practice time to 20 hours per week and no more than four hours per day. With two one-hour weight lifting sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the time for an individual focus can be hard to find.
Macmillan has utilized one-on-one practice opportunities as a way to continue the development of his players.
A lot of times I will ask a player what they want to work on he said.
Donahue said the individual practice time is almost a must to work on techniques. And the work seems to be paying off.
Something Neil talks about a lot is that everybody's hit is different she said. You can have time to watch your individual hit and correct little details that might be different from someone else's.
Something about it this season has really clicked. I keep coming out every week, and it gets better and better.
As the Bobcats continue their quest toward a Mid-American Conference championship
both of this weekend's match-ups will be critical ones.
With only one conference loss
Kent State is in a first-place tie with Ohio and Miami. Missouri State
of the Missouri Valley Conference
also has one loss.
Macmillan said Ohio's primary concern is today's contest with the Golden Flashes. He said Ohio learned some things from its 1-0 win over them Sept. 28.
We had some good ideas to stop their very good fast break, he said. I think they'll learn a lot more from us. We've been trying to look at some different options they might play.
