Hangovers: What works and what leaves your hanging

When Katie Meyers, a junior studying journalism, wakes up after a long Saturday night, she cures her hangover by eating home fries.-

said Meyers.

After a full night of drinking, students suffer from hangovers, which are the physical effects, such as headaches or nausea, in response to heavy consumption of alcohol. While there are many theories on how to get rid of a hangover, some of these remedies don't do anything or can make the hangover worse.

Thirty percent of Americans partake in high risk drinking ' four drinks or more for a woman and five or more for a man, according to the Center for Disease Control Web site.

Ohio University students on average are high-risk drinkers, consuming as many as 14 drinks within two days, causing hangovers the next morning, said Terry Koons, associate director of Health Promotions.

(This) means they are drinking too fast and not hydrating enough Koons said of preventing hangovers.

What works

When my friends and I wake up the next morning we go straight for the fridge and make chocolate milk. It always makes me feel a little better

said Christine Friscic, a sophomore studying public relations.

Any dairy product, vegetable or fruit has some protein to help with the symptoms of the hangover, Koons said.

Students who eat while drinking slow down the absorption of alcohol in their system, said Dr. Susan Righi from Hudson Health Center.

Kari Summers, a senior studying visual communications, sleeps most of the day and tries not to move too much.

Sleep is a way to use time to bring down your BAC level

said Koons, if they have drank 14 drinks in four hours

the drinker needs another ten hours before the rest of the alcohol is processed.

Hannah Drown, a junior studying journalism, drinks water before and after she goes to bed.

Because drinking alcohol can cause dehydration

drinking water or juice will help the symptoms be less severe in the morning

Koons said.

What does nothing

I drink a Vitamin Water and take aspirin before I go to bed so I don't feel so awful the next morning

said Andrew Gerber, a senior studying sports management.

While it is effective to hydrate, vitamins won't do anything to alleviate a hangover. Some multivitamins have caffeine in the ingredients and that helps with alertness, Koons said.

Josh Pilson, a freshman studying marketing, said he and his basketball team had partied after winning a big game, but after exercising at practice the next day, his hangover had lessened.

Running in the morning may get rid of calories from the night before

but that person doesn't have the advantage to get over the hangover. It just might eliminate the number of calories they consumed the night before

Koons said.

Daniel Compton, a freshman studying engineering, drinks a frozen, blended white chocolate frappuccino from Nelson Dining Hall during Sunday morning brunch.

Having caffeine during a hangover may increase alertness
