Ball State alum David Letterman now has one more reason to flash his awkward, gap-toothed smile today: his Cardinals have just landed in the Top 25 for the first time in school history.
This does speak volumes for the hard work these kids have done
Ball State coach Brady Hoke said.- and we have been fortunate to be on the right side of the win-loss column.- falling at No. 25 late in the 2004 season.
Ball State (6-0
3-0 MAC) shut out Toledo (1-4
1-1 MAC) on the Rockets' home turf
31-0. It is the first time since 1965 that the Cardinals have started 6-0.
They have a good, versatile defense, Toledo coach Tom Amstutz said. They put a lot of guys in the box to play against the run. As we adjusted personnel, they adjusted guys. They executed well.
Both teams got off to a slow start. Toledo
however
never found its second notch. The Cardinals held the Rockets to just 157 total yards and 14 rush yards. Ian McGarvey's 21-yard field goal was the lone score of the first half.
The Cardinals got off to a quicker start in the third quarter
then poured it on in the fourth quarter with MiQuale Lewis' back-to-back rushing touchdowns. Lewis finished the game with 160 yards on 31 carries. -
30-27
in what proved to be a battle of kickers. Igor Iveljic kicked the game-winning 25-yard field goal before Nate Reed of Kent State missed the potential game-tying attempt wide right from 23 yards.
