A new Board of Trustees proposal likely to be enacted in January will prohibit individual members from speaking for the board and criticizing the president publicly.
The Statement of Expectations, to be modeled after a similar agreement adopted by Ohio State University's Board of Trustees last year, is a series of guidelines that also encourages members to prepare diligently for meetings and use respectful treatment of peers.
Publicly
trustees should be supportive and respectful of the president. In executive sessions trustees should be candid and as warranted
constructively critical
OSU's statement reads. The Board must speak as a single entity. No individual trustee or self-appointed group of trustees shall speak on behalf of the Board or the University.
These limits could cause a larger problem, said Student Trustee Tracy Kelly.
