Stars Make Teen Comedy Appealing

In preparation for the Oct. 17 release of Sex Drive, I took part in a telephone conference with three of the film's stars ' Josh Zuckerman, Amanda Crew and Clark Duke. The movie is about Ian (Zuckerman), who goes on a road trip to meet his Internet dream girl, who may or may not be who she claims, with Crew and Duke as his two best friends. I've seen the trailer and some clips, and wrote it off early as just another teen sex farce in which the somewhat-nerdy nice guy realizes the girl he really wants is the girl that's been in front of him the whole time.

Maybe that is the movie, in a nutshell. But based on the warmth, humor and easy rapport between Crew and Zuckerman, hopefully the characters can transcend their two-dimensional stereotypes. Crew mentioned in the interview she took the role because it didn't fit the girl-next-door stereotype, that in the movie she's just one of the guys. Zuckerman said he worked hard to make sure the relationships were realistic, even going so far as to create backstories for his character. After talking to Crew and Zuckerman for over a half hour and witnessing (alright, hearing) their give-and-take and complete lack of ego, I've decided it's premature to write off the whole genre in general. At least until I've seen Zuckerman in his oversized doughnut suit.
