State representatives: Proposed act would protect renters during foreclosure

Two Ohio representatives introduced legislation yesterday to protect tenants from eviction if their landlords enter foreclosure.

As the law stands, any student who is not renting from the university can be evicted in three days if their house or apartment complex is foreclosed, said Jeff Wise, legislative aide for Rep. Ted Celeste, DG

Wise said.

Ohio Reps. Mike Foley, DG he said.

Rep. Jimmy Stewart, R-Athens, said a couple constituents had addressed him about rental rights over the years and that he is open to what Celeste and Foley have introduced.

The Ohio Renter's Protection Act will be introduced to the Ohio House of Representatives and assigned to a committee.

Representatives likely will not vote on the act until after the November elections, said Kevin Pangrace, legislative aide for Rep. Foley.

Congress has been dedicated to providing foreclosure assistance by approving restrictions on payday lending rates, and Stewart said he will review the legislation to see how it can help renters.

It doesn't get much more important than a roof over your head Stewart said.
