Even though The Movement has been staging dance performances since the 1970s, no two performances have been the same.
The Movement, a student organization for dance majors and non-dance majors at Ohio University, will kick off its Movement Lab Show at 8 tonight at the Shirley Wimmer Dance Theatre in Putnam Hall.
The performances never have a set theme and students submit their own work, said Megan Payne, organization president and a senior studying dance.
The student-run project is the group's biggest show of the year and will feature solo performances and modern choreography, Payne said. The show will include choreography by Adriana Durant, a visiting professor who has had her choreography performed in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Columbus.
I really enjoy (Durant's) piece
Payne said. The choices she's made with her dancers is very eye-catching. It also is not as serious as a lot of things that you see or think of when you think of modern dance. It's more like dance theater. That's probably the one that stands out the most to me.
Two strong pieces from freshmen also stand out in this year's show, Payne said, adding that freshmen are usually hesitant to get involved so early in the year.
I think that kind of shows what kind of class (the freshman) are going to be in in the years to come. They're very strong dancers she said.
Megan Nicklos, one of the freshmen performing, said that she is nervous about her first college show.
It can be kind of intimidating
coming to this school and not really having the training that the other seniors and juniors have
said Nicklos, who is studying dance.
While the show is an opportunity for freshmen and non-majors to show what they know, it is also an opportunity for upperclassmen to show previous work and screen dance documentaries.
Jesse Keller, a senior studying dance, said that film is becoming an increasingly valued skill with dance because it takes the dance off the stage.
Video performances are a big upcoming thing in dance
Keller said.
