Student Senate: Athletics seeks new attendance incentives

Athletics Director Jim Schaus briefed Ohio University's student senators on the state of the Athletics Department to get ideas for drawing students to events.

We're trying to figure out how we get better and have more success

and it's harder because financially we are unable to do that Schaus said.

The athletics department has to work with a $1.8 million deficit this year and will apply a 5 percent department-wide budget cut, he said.

He added the department will look for donations from both in and outside of the university to help offset the cut.We believe investment equals return Schaus said. So if we want our programs to do better

we've got to find a way to invest more.

Schaus said exposure from strong athletics programs correlates positively with enrollment, fundraising and campus life.Senators suggested creating an incentive for Resident Assistants to bring their residents to events, offering student-led activities such as cornhole, and opening a beer garden to draw students.

Athletics is looking into creating a Bobcat Village next year, where students can eat food, play cornhole and listen to music before football games, Schaus said.

Student Senate also passed two resolutions last night.

The first resolution allowed senate resolutions to be cataloged electronically for future reference and the second gave $60 to the senate's reverse trick-or-treat, in which Student Senate interns give candy and advice for a safe Halloween to on-campus residents. The annual event will take place Oct. 26.

Following the resolutions, Student Senate entered executive session. When asked why, Vice President Sally Neidhard refused to provide the senate's reasoning, disregarding Ohio Revised Code 121.22, which requires a public body to state a valid reason for holding a closed meeting.

President Michael Adeyanju cited confidential matters after the meeting's adjournment. He said the senate would offer more details today.
