As Ohio University attempts to suppress its party school reputation, Athens County worker Heather Reed asked Student Senate to speak with students after recalling her eventful homecoming weekend.
Reed, curator and education coordinator for the Athens County Historical Society and Museum, said students vomited in front of the Court Street museum, vandalized its sign and pounded on its windows.
Reed said she was shocked to find intoxicated students stumbling around the street when she arrived at the museum at 7 a.m. Saturday.
This is not the image we want to have within the town's eyes and we don't want to have this image nationwide where people look for jobs
said Michael Adeyanju, president of Student Senate.
Reed and Adeyanju said they have heard from OU alumni who said they were denied jobs because of the university's party-school image.
It's one thing to have fun said Kent Smith, vice president for Student Affairs. It is another thing to have an image that could impact your career.
During the homecoming parade, students threw candy at the historical society's float and screamed in the staff's faces, Reed said.
I got hit in the head with a Smartie Reed said. Which now sounds really
really funny but at the time
it was like
'Okay
really? How old are you?'
She said she does not want to prevent students from having fun but is worried about drunken students misbehaving.
I am asking that we can work something out to make people aware that this is a community where people live
this is where we work and that we are human beings
Reed said.
