Women's Basketball: Randall focuses on team defense, gaining respect

Semeka Randall knew building trust among a senior class that had already seen two coaches depart would be a tough task.

Former coach Lynn Bria resigned in 2006 and Sylvia Crawley left to coach Boston College last spring after just two seasons with the Bobcats.

Now seniors Chandra Myers and Lauren Hmiel are placing their trust in Randall.

The biggest thing is just showing she cares

Myers said. She's real straightforward. We know if we go to her she's going to tell the truth. That's one of the biggest things and I really respect that.

The fact that Randall has an NCAA national title ring from her playing days at Tennessee 10 years ago doesn't hurt either.

She said she might wear it tomorrow in the Bobcats' exhibition game against the Ohio Girls Basketball Magazine Legends (OGBM).

We know she's been there guard Jenny Poff said. We know what she's saying is true.

Randall said she believes the team trusts her.

She has been engineering specific drills in practice in which players have to trust each other to succeed.

If someone's pressing us and we can't trust that someone's going to get the ball or do something good with it then we can't get through the drill

Hmiel said. It's more of her allowing us to trust our teammates to get to the next step or the next level.

Randall has been focusing on the team's defense. She said that she believes Crawley's offense worked, and she won't make many changes.

The drastic change is probably from the defensive end

Randall said. To me

defense has always been in your head. It's about having the passion to do it and wanting to do it. -
