Bradley Evans' assumption that learning gun safety and marksmanship inspires hate and intolerance could not be less true. His unwarranted bashing merely surfaced his own intolerance to firearms and weaponry. Evans is correct that college students should expand their minds and that should include gun safety.
In 1999, the National Academy of Science estimated that 258 million private firearms were owned in the United States. The NRA estimates that nearly half of the households in America have at least one gun owner. Shouldn't students have some familiarity with life-altering devices found so commonly?
If the mere act of shooting guns instills hate in a human being then this country must be filled with a lot of hate. Nobody is forcing anti-firearm believers to hold or shoot a gun. This activity was optional and educational. Ohio University should be applauded for allowing students to have new experiences and learn life skills that cannot be gained in the classroom.
