The citywide boil order has been lifted today except for those east of the state Route 33 bypass, said Mayor Paul Wiehl.
A biological indicator, originating on the east side of the bypass, came up positive during routine sampling, said an Athens' Water Treatment Center operator. A boil order was then issued at 2:40 p.m. Saturday.
The water is being flushed and chlorine is being added to it, Wiehl said
Those in areas affected by the boil order should bring the water to a boil, have it actively boil for a minute, and then allow the water to cool down, which will effectively sanitize the water and remove any bacteria that was present, said Charles Hammer, administrator for the City-County Health Department and a registered sanitarian
Water on campus is now safe to be consumed, said Ohio University spokeswoman Katie Quaranta.--Emilie Schneider contributed to this report.
