Athens welcomes budding jewelry business to State Street

Whether someone is purchasing a present for a baby shower or celebrating an 80-year-old's birthday, gifts can be found at So ... Libby's Two.

So ... Libby's Two opened for business in December in The Market on State, formerly the University Mall, 1002 E. State St.

The store sells both costume and finer jewelry, which start at $50 and could reach more than $1,000, said owner Maria Scarmack, who named the store after her daughters Sophia

and Olivia.

It goes from sterling silver to 18-karat gold

she said. We are not just a jewelry store we are a full-line gift shop. Gifts for any occasion and any age group.

Scarmack also owns Interior Concepts, 42 N. Court St.

The East State Street location provided greater accessibility for the large portion of the Athens community that does not shop on Court Street, she said.

I find the Athens community is pretty loyal to their retailers and they appreciate or enjoy shopping at local stores Scarmack said, adding that Brent Hayes and Tom Parfitt, owners of The Market on State, made the building more attractive for retailers.

If we can create opportunities for local people

it is really good for the whole economy

especially if they are local owners

because it means the profits they make stay in the community

Hayes said. It is a welcome addition and the kind of thing we like to see.

A grand opening will occur once the façade is completed toward the end of January, Scarmack said.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
