By combining so many different kinds of music, Athens band Elemental Groove Theory has almost as many elements as the periodic table.
With a rock 'n' roll base, Elemental Groove Theory swirls together jazz, blues, reggae, psychedelic and electronic music and more to create a sound that keeps the fans guessing.
We even have a bossa nova piece that we haven't used yet
said bassist Matt Urminski of Cleveland. Everyone in the band has their musical phases and I have a feeling that every time we go through a different phase we will come up with a new idea.
One totally new thing the band recently added is a new drummer, Joe Biondo of Cincinnati.
I like that this band is a challenge because I know I'm playing in a group of people with real music abilities Biondo said. Other bands just say 'Hey man
make it sound okay
' but these guys challenge me and what I play. ... It is unlike anything I have done in a band before.
Making up the rest of Elemental Groove Theory is guitarist and vocalist Dan Perez of West Chester, Ohio, lead guitarist Mark Meredith of Cleveland and pianist Mike Brokamp of Loveland, Ohio.
Even though the band officially came together just last quarter, the band members are eager to get out on the town and play a lot more shows.
We are going to be putting free songs online and playing more shows to let Athens see our music
Perez said. Plus we know a lot of places in Cincinnati
Columbus and Cleveland that we can play.
In the spring the band said it plans to play at a lot of the fests, such as Millfest and High Fest. Band members also want to work out new songs and perfect the older ones as they prepare to record and release their first EP before the school year is over.
We have the songs on social commentary
the love songs and the weekend debaucheries
Urminski said. But there is new stuff coming out all the time (in the music industry) so we are trying to make our music tight and add new stuff too. In fact
we are playing four songs this Friday that we have never performed before.
Elemental Groove Theory will be revealing those new songs Friday at 19 South, 19 South Court Street.
