Board of Trustees approves 2 faculty representatives

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio - The Ohio University Board of Trustees passed a resolution at Friday's meeting inviting two faculty members to act as non-voting representatives.

The resolution, which was introduced amid faculty complaints of feeling ignored, is an effort to increase communication between faculty and the administration.

The reason faculty continue to be hardheaded about being involved and participating in all of this is the same motivation (the Board) has

said Sergio López-Permouth, chairman of Faculty Senate. It is a call for service. It is a duty to the state. It is a love of the institution.

The heads of Faculty Senate's Finance and Facilities Committee and University Curriculum Council will sit on the board's resources and academics committees, respectively.

It is a huge step forward in trustee-faculty communication said David Thomas, vice chairman of the Faculty Senate. They have given us a wonderful opportunity.

Thomas is currently chairman of the University Curriculum Council and Joe McLaughlin leads the Finance and Facilities Committee.

Both McLaughlin and Thomas serve three-year terms with the possibility of one re-election in Faculty Senate.

The board has yet to define the length of each representative's term, said Governance Committee Chairman Ned Dewire, adding that all trustees agreed the representatives will not serve the full six years.

The board annually will assess the effectiveness of maintaining a faculty representative and will allow the chairman of the board to appoint the representatives or other faculty members to additional committees.

McLaughlin and Thomas will join the board at its next meeting in April.

Other non-voting members of the board voiced their approval.

As a student trustee I support this resolution whole-heartedly
