Bobcats pick up transfers in football, basketball

The Bobcats bolstered their backcourt Friday when the team announced former Indiana point guard Armon Bassett has transferred to Ohio.

Bassett enrolled at Ohio for Winter Quarter and will have two years of eligibility remaining. He will become eligible after Fall Quarter next year.

Bassett averaged 11.4 points and 3.3 assists as the Hoosiers starting point guard last season. He was a third-team All-Big Ten selection.

He was dismissed from the Hoosiers April 1 after he and teammate Jamarcus Ellis missed a team appointment and then failed to run laps as punishment.

After he left Indiana, Bassett initially transferred to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in July. But he left the school for personal reasons in December.

Bassett is familiar with coach John Groce, whose stepbrother Travis Steele coached Bassett's AAU team, Indiana Elite.

Bassett, originally from Terre Haute, Ind., was a McDonald's All-American Nominee in 2005.

After high school, he played a season at the Hargrave Military Academy.

The Ohio football team also added a transfer in former Iowa State quarterback Phillip Bates, according to Media Relations Director Jason Corriher.

Bates also enrolled in classes for Winter Quarter, and will be eligible at the beginning of the 2010 season with two years of eligibility remaining.

As a sophomore this season, Bates was 11-24 for 137 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in five games. He also had 24 rushes for 166 yards.

Bates is originally from Omaha, Neb. Coach Frank Solich recruited him out of high school. 2 Sports
