Gazebo proposed for South Green

A vacant slab of concrete on South Green might be transformed into a shady oasis if Student Senate approves plans to build a gazebo.

Andrew Wade and Kate Hanford, South Green senators for Student Senate, are submitting plans for erecting a gazebo to make the area more

attractive to prospective students.

The cement space, which is approximately 12 feet by 12 feet, is located in the center of South Green behind the Front Four. Once home to a fountain display, the octagon-like space is now an unmaintained piece of cement, Wade said.

A lot of our constituents are asking us why there is a big slab of cement on South Green

and we figured people wanted change Hanford said. It's not pleasant to look at.

Wade and Hanford are still in the early stages of planning and are looking at different gazebos to best fit the area. They have not yet raised any funding. Cost estimates vary greatly from $2,000 to $8,000, depending on the type of material used, the types of flooring and seating areas.

To raise money, the senators are meeting with South Green hall councils to discuss ideas such as a charity softball game with administrators in the Department of Residence Housing to request some university funding.

The idea, which has been in the works since the middle of last quarter, has garnered positive reactions from both students and administrators, Wade said. He is also a Smith House RA.

A lot of people like this idea; they want to see something done about it he said.

The senators still need to meet with OU officials and receive Student Senate approval. Wade said he doesn't think anything will happen until the end of this quarter, at the earliest.
