When Josh Antonuccio graduated from Ohio University in 1996, he began to question if he had made the right career choice.
I never thought I'd do anything with it when I graduated
Antonuccio said of his degree in audio production.
However, for the past eight years, he has helped numerous Athens bands take their ideas and bring them to life as the co-owner of 3 Elliott Studio.
After spending four years away from Athens, the Pittsburgh native received a call from Chris Pyle, co-owner of 3 Elliott and owner of Donkey Coffee and Espresso, to move back to Athens.
I was really involved in the music scene in school so it was a homecoming of sorts Antonuccio said.
Pyle offered Antonuccio a job as both the booking manager for Donkey and as a producer at the studio, a decision that Pyle is happy he made.
He just keeps getting better and better
Pyle said. Maybe I'm biased
but I listen to some of the stuff that he has done and my mind is blown.
After a few years of producing bands, the studio became so popular that a change was needed. Antonuccio and Pyle set out to upgrade the studio from both a professional and aesthetic standpoint.
It was really like an Amish barn raising of sorts
Antonuccio said. We had people from bands volunteering work and labor to us. It was really amazing.
Since the renovation, 3 Elliott has become one of the most popular recording studios in the area, working with hundred of bands, both local and national.
Josh brings an enthusiasm to recording projects that is really hard to match
said Greg Dutton, lead singer and songwriter for Pittsburgh-based Lohio. Antonuccio produced the band's first album Sleeping in Stereo and mixed their most recent album History, the Destroyer.
Even though we recorded the second album on our own
we decided to go back to Josh for the mixing because we have a lot of faith in Josh's ears and thought he would come up with an interesting interpretation of the record that we made
he said.
While the high praise for his work is appreciated, helping bands succeed and reach their full potential is what Antonuccio loves most about the job.
I just feel incredibly privileged that I've gotten to work with the caliber of artists that I've gotten to
and it's been great to see so many bands in the Athens scene get exposure both in the region and nationally
he said.
