From jazzy and dark to raw and rebellious, the stage of Casa Cantina will come alive this Saturday night with rock and roll in many forms.
Coming from Detroit, a city steeped in musical history, is the five-piece band Mick Bassett & the Marthas. Taking from sounds of the past, its style has been described as New Orleans swing and jazz, said lead vocalist Mick Bassett.
Growing up in Detroit
living and playing there there's definitely a feeling that makes its way into the music Bassett said. Detroit's got an edge to it.
The band has two releases with another on the way in February called Scissors and Suckers.
Also on the bill is Church of the Red Museum. Named after a cult in an X-Files episode, this Columbus band has been playing their dark brand of rock for four years. Their sound plays off the raspy voice of singer Brian Travis and a collection
of eclectic instruments.
The organ has a lot to do with it
and the trumpet and violin add something a little creepy
the band's drummer Robby Coleman said. It's not exactly warm and fuzzy.
Both Mick Bassett and Church of the Red Museum have played in Athens before, but this time the two will share a stage with local band Wheels on Fire.
Coleman from Church of the Red Museum described Wheels on Fire as a dark Americana
and like Church, Wheels on Fire use an organ to create a raw rock and roll sound.
Kind of like Booker T. and the MG's
we wanted to make sure it wasn't just a guitar driven band
lead singer Michael Chaney said.
The band will release its new album Get Famous on Feb. 17 and will soon begin a three week European tour.
