Texas punk band to play at Union

Hailing from the tight-knit punk scene of Denton, Texas, Teenage Cool Kids might not play the music of the popular crowd.

The two-year-old group plays a mixture of indie rock, shoegaze and punk, said Andrew Savage, the band's guitarist and singer.

The band's concert tonight is a swap with Athens' own Wheels On Fire. In exchange for setting up a show in Denton, Teenage Cool Kids got the chance to come to Athens while touring through the Midwest.

We like to play college towns because kids like to go nuts there

Savage said. And they don't like to spend a lot of money so shows are usually cheap.

Guitarist Daniel Ziegler and drummer Bradley Kerl both attend University of North Texas and split their time between school and the band, and Savage is a recent graduate. Many of the lyrics off of their first album, Queer Salutations, lament the challenges of this stage of life, Savage said.

Their new album, Foreign Land, is set to release in the United States in February on Protagonist Records. It was recorded in the band's house with help from Denton's The Wax Museums. It is a different direction for the group, said Chris Pickering, the band's bassist.

We're going new places and refining our sound more Pickering said. That's what's behind the name Foreign Lands.
