The Meat and Potatoes: Think outside the degree in job searches

Some seniors are stressing about grad school applications and tests, while some are still unsure if they'll be able to finish all of the classes they need to graduate come June 14. The majority, however, are focused on finding a job that doesn't suck once they graduate.

Silly me, I took an internship abroad during Fall Quarter. While finding a career was certainly on my mind, I couldn't really find the time - or the cash - to fly back across the Atlantic to interview for anything. So I simply sent in resumes over a few job hunting search engines and called it quits.

I got back to the good old USA with a quarter's worth of experience at a pretty fabulous job. But how on earth am I supposed to find something that fabulous in just six short months?

I've spoken with so many of my friends and classmates who are feeling the same anxiety as I am about finding a job in what many have called a bleak job market. However, after talking to a recent graduate, I finally discovered the secret to finding a job and, more importantly, a paycheck.

The recent grad had been a student in the College of Communication and originally hoped to find a career with the media or with a media firm. However, when she discovered that it was such a competitive and dying profession, she looked elsewhere and landed herself in a lucrative real estate job in Columbus.

While it's not the most glamorous job, it does pay the bills. Because so many people are trying to survive the credit crunch, which has become one of my favorite hot-button terms, they're moving from the suburbs into apartments and housing within the city of Columbus.

So the real secret of job hunting isn't to go looking for a job that is strictly a result of a specific major or degree. There are plenty of full-time, well-paying jobs in many different industries. While they may not be ideal, they still pay the bills and help pave the way to other opportunities.

The secret is to take chances and swallow your pride to find something that you can stand doing for a couple of years. The first job isn't the last, my friend.
