One thing has been lacking for the Bobcats during their indoor season - distance.
Through two meets, the Bobcats have yet to get much production from their distance runners. But there is a reason.
Coach Clay Calkins has chosen to rest his distance runners in preparation for the last half of the season.
It's still early right now for our distance athletes
Calkins said. We'll see distance athletes run throughout the indoor season but the main players on the distance side will be held out in certain meets to get ready for the All-Ohio.
It will be no different for the Bobcat distance runners this weekend as they compete in the Robert Morris Six Way. Calkins still plans on holding out his top distance runners.
One of those runners that will be sitting out this weekend is Annie Beecham. The junior is coming off a cross country season in which she and teammate Kari Summers both went to the NCAA National Championships.
Summers will also not be running this weekend.
Resting will definitely help us Beecham said.
The break from racing has allowed Beecham and some of the other runners to recuperate from a long cross country season.
The indoor season has provided challenges for the distance runners. With the lack of an indoor track facility, the distance runners have had to modify their training.
It's a lot different because the cold weather has been forcing us inside
Beecham said.
Beecham and the other Bobcat runners have moved into The Convo to run circles.
[Running on the concrete] is hard on our shins and hips
Beecham said. We've been really careful about injuries
but little things have been popping up here and there.
Despite not having his top distance runners, Calkins believes the season has gone well so far for the Bobcats.
We're using the meets as a training platform trying to get better each week
Calkins said. Hopefully
some improvements can keep happening in sprints and jumps and good things are happening with the throws.
