Budget cuts for OU require canceling big sports like football and basketball. Ball-handling has nothing akin to intellectual pursuit. Those sports exist only to produce professional players and the rah-rah aspect of college life for older high schoolers.
The only purpose universities were invented for was to provide education at a high level.
Students too young for intellectual pursuit now come for drugs and sex, to study a little. The remedy to that is to allow only persons age 21 or over to enroll. The exception would be to allow bona fide teenage geniuses. At age 21 and older, a person knows what s/he wants to study and won't waste the first and second years (and their parents' money and loans) unfocused.
From age 16 or high school graduation, kids could work national service jobs that would provide tuition for eventual university or vocational schooling. During that time, they would come to know the study they wish to pursue.
Further budget savings would result in deleting tenure with the guaranteed lifetime salary, perks and retirement they provide to the professorial class. Administrative salaries would also be reduced.
