Hayden Johnston and Robert Maddox III didn't take long to get started.
Both players put up big numbers last weekend in the first games of the season for the Bobcats.
Maddox leads Ohio with a .429 average, and Johnston hit two home runs. He has a .389 batting average with an .889 slugging percentage.
It was the first time we have seen live pitching other than our guys
Maddox said. I was just trying to be calm relaxed and not getting too anxious.
However, coach Joe Carbone said that it's still too early in the season to draw any conclusions.
There are still things they need to improve on Carbone said. I don't get too excited to have one good weekend. What counts is if it's a consistency throughout the season.
Last weekend, Furman (3-2) split four games with Ball State. Carbone said that the Cardinals are one of the best teams in the Mid-American Conference.
They are a good club
Carbone said. They have good pitching. They've always had good pitching and good defense.
They are a good quality club.
After five games
Furman's earned run average is 6.46. Ohio's is 6.00.
Johnston said that scoring early will be very important.
It's a big mental thing, Johnston said. It gets the other team down.
Ohio (1-3) hasn't played Furman since 2005
when the Bobcats won two of three games.
We are looking to win four games, Carbone said. That's why we go down there. We're not coming back after three and getting in the game.
We are running a lot of people out there to see who can do what.
