In celebration of the unluckiest day of the year, musicians from around Ohio will gather for a Friday night of noise and horror movies.
As a joint effort between the All Campus Radio Network and the Action Committee, a roster of nine noise bands and performers was assembled to perform at a house known as the
Crystal Castle - 28 Central Ave. - behind the backdrop of vintage slasher films.
We all thought it would be really fun to play on Friday the 13th
said Ty Owen, a Donner Party Dinner Party musician from Lancaster. Plus I was always obsessed with really corny '80s horror movies.
ACRN staff member and Nyodene D musician Aaron Vilk from Mentor booked and organized the show. He rented a projector from Alden Library to show the first five Friday the 13th movies. Vilk has booked
concerts before but used a new
method for today's show.
A big part of booking this was using Facebook Vilk said. I sent out a message and tagged everyone all the guys I've seen before and wanted to play with.
Many responded to Vilk, including C. Spencer Yeh from Cincinnati. Yeh is a classically trained violinist who has made noise music for the last 10 years in his project Burning Star Core. This show will be a solo violin performance for Yeh.
I saw Yeh over winter break
and it was one of the first times I've been truly blown away by a music performance
said Brian Jackson of Concord,
a member of Donner Party Dinner Party.
Also performing is Kid Panda Hands, a veteran noise band of almost 10 years from Athens. Made up of Andrew Lampela, co-owner of Haffa's Records, and Jimmy Kaisor, owner of Decorative Injections, 44 N. Court St., the band has played noise in Athens since before noise was cool
Vilk said.
Being a noise show, much of the emphasis of the night is on technology and gear, Owen said. Musician Matt Emmons from the Dayton band Five Deadly Venoms will be showcasing a homemade modular synthesizer, and Donner Party Dinner Party has assembled a video collage to play behind their performance.
Along with homemade gear, the members of Donner Party Dinner Party will be printing their own t-shirts at the performance. Like all Action
Committee shows, donations are requested to help pay the way for touring bands.
