As a sign of solidarity, two fraternities are working together to raise money by shaving heads. Phi Gamma Delta and Delta Tau Delta are running the Cut for Cancer event tomorrow from 2-6 p.m. at Regis Salons, 10 S. Court St. For a donation of $5, the salon will provide buzz cuts for those willing. The event is in honor of sophomore Ryan Graham of Phi Gamma Delta and Delta Tau Delta's former housemother Jackie Sayre. Both developed cancer in the past few months. What's scary is he's bigger stronger and faster than I am. But he has testicular cancer and here I am - healthy said Chuck Wirtz, a junior in Phi Gamma Delta. Sayre, who's currently facing brain cancer, will receive half of the money raised to go toward her medical bills. The remaining funds will be donated to the American Cancer Society in Graham's name. With Phi Gamma Delta's 100 members and the additional 70 who belong to Delta Tau Delta, Wirtz said he hopes for a strong showing. The ultimate goal is to raise $1 000 but I would love to see awareness get sparked said Wirtz, who lost three grandparents to cancer and has a father who smokes. Sayre said she might stop by at the beginning of the event, adding she could use a trim herself but remains grateful for the care. I'm very pleased with the two fraternities trying to raise awareness and raise money. There are so many people who need a helping hand Sayre said. I didn't know how much it would cost until it happened to me. Whether Graham will appear is not yet known. His mom told us no but he told us yes Wirtz said. |
