Hockey: Ohio continues late-season run with sweep of Robert Morris

No longer does location matter to the Bobcats.

Ohio has been one of the league's hottest teams of late, and not just on its home ice.

The winning ways continued this weekend with a sweep of Robert Morris College in Chicago.

Ohio has won four in a row, and 9-of-11 overall.

Defenseman Steve Osacky led the charge on Friday with a pair of goals for the Bobcats in a 6-2 win. Freshman center Josh Fodor had two assists for Ohio, which also received a shorthanded tally from Zack Barbis.

Coach Dan Morris moved Osacky from the top of the point on the power play down to the sidewall in order to get him shooting more frequently.

The results were encouraging.

Osacky's third goal of the weekend series tied the game for the Bobcats early in the third period on Saturday night after falling behind 2-0.

It was an important goal to solidify his team's rally, which was started in the second period by Jimmy Irwin.

Morris' rookie-laden team is growing up fast, and is 6-0-2 in its last eight road games.

It's important for a young team to have confidence on the road

Morris said. But it's a process. There's a certain way to play at home and a certain way on the road and our guys understand that now.

Zach Tisdale gave the Bobcats their first lead midway through the third period, but Ohio's power play unit yielded a shorthanded breakaway to Robert Morris' Bart Reeves with less than eight minutes remaining.

Reeves beat goaltender Chris Carlson, and the two teams eventually went to a shootout.

At times, the Bobcats were unusually careless. But as Saturday's game went on, they were up to the task.

Ohio drew another penalty after the shorthanded goal and was relentless until the end of regulation.

Barbis was Ohio's first shooter in the tiebreaker, and he beat Dan Venet for the only goal. Carlson stopped all Robert Morris shooters, preserving the four points for Ohio.

I thought Chris played really well Morris said. The angles are different (in road arenas) and goalies tend to stay in their net.

He made some big saves for us on Saturday, and it's tough to fault him for any of the goals we let in.

Morris spoke highly of his team's ability to adjust and adapt to different situations.

They have shut teams down defensively

won in overtime and shootouts

come from behind late to tie games and overpowered teams.

Such experiences will be a valuable asset in the playoffs.

You want to win games every way you can, Morris said. You might catch a couple bad breaks in the playoffs, and those experiences will be there to fall back on.
