McDavis suggests teamwork, creativity as answers to state funding problems

McDavis said during the annual Founders Day Convocation. The governor's support for higher education calls for more demonstrated accountability from public universities with the implementation of a new funding formula linked to outcomes.

Under Gov. Ted Strickland's budget proposal for the next two years, which depends on about $3 billion in federal aid, colleges will receive at least a 6-percent funding increase to cover tuition revenue lost by the extension of the tuition freeze. But even with additional funding, OU will face a $5 million revenue shortfall next year.

McDavis also emphasized the importance of sharing work among departments and offices.

Ohio University must work as a team to tackle tough decisions in light of the economy, said President Roderick McDavis in his State of the University address Friday.

We must find creative solutions to our region and our state's economic woes McDavis said during the annual Founders Day Convocation. The governor's support for higher education calls for more demonstrated accountability from public universities with the implementation of a new funding formula linked to outcomes.

McDavis also emphasized the importance of sharing work among departments

and offices.

Our commitment is to limit expenditures in order to protect the resources needed to support our academic mission and those services central to achieving that mission he said.

He cited the recent merger of the departments of Residence Life and Housing as an example of the cooperation that should continue to be identified and implemented in the future. The merger will also result in some administrative job losses.

To be sure

we face many difficult decisions over the next several years

McDavis said. But we must have the courage to make difficult decisions in order to preserve our core mission of undergraduate education

select graduate programs and distinctive areas of research. These are our priorities. Vision Ohio is and will continue to be our guide.

McDavis looked back on OU's history as a leader among public universities in the areas of access and approach to education. He said OU must use innovative methods today to save money and to improve students' learning

experiences.

(Innovation) means embracing our historic legacy and remaining true to our core values

McDavis said. Now

more than ever

we must remain steadfast to that commitment.
