Student Senate passed a resolution last night calling for a four-week winter break under Ohio University's 2012 semester calendar.
Students overwhelmingly support this
said president Michael Adeyanju, the primary sponsor of the bill.
He pointed to surveys conducted by the Office of Institutional Research, which randomly sampled around 2,000 students.
The survey found that students' top two concerns with the academic calendar were maintaining a longer winter break and getting out of school earlier. According to the resolution, with a four-week break students would get out on
the second week of May, addressing both priorities.
The resolution states that a period shorter than four weeks would disadvantage graduate students conducting research and seeking employment. It would also allow students to seek employment between semesters and relax, preventing them from burning out, according to the resolution.
Many other Ohio schools operate on four-week winter breaks between semesters, according to the resolution.
Adeyanju also argued that such a resolution would not interfere with other semester proposals, such as the May-mester a summer session immediately following spring semester.
The May-mester is separate from a four-week break Adeyanju said. He said he thought both could be done, though members of the transition team have questioned whether both could be done.
The resolution will be sent to the transition team as well as OU President Roderick McDavis and all OU's college deans.
