Empowered Woman's Week began Saturday with a Valentine's Day Dance at Casa Nueva and continues today with Relaxing the Stress Away with SHADES from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Gordy 109.
The weeklong series of panels, speakers and musical performances will raise awareness about the continued discrimination against women and how women can change that, said Holly Greenawalt, an Ohio University sophomore studying dietetics and a member of Open Doors.
Women have become more diverse. They are in sports
religion and other things considered masculine Greenawalt said. It sends out a message to women that they don't have to stick to the standard.
The goal of Empowered Woman's Week is not only to create awareness about gender equality, but also to celebrate women who have crossed the gender boundary, said Lacey Rogers, president of Empowered Women of Ohio.
About 200 people attended the Valentine's Day Dance that kicked off the second annual week at OU.
It's important that people are aware women's issues are still on the forefront. Women still aren't paid as much as men said Lindsey Uhrig, a junior studying political science. It's just kind of sad that people don't know.
Although women have made progress in gaining equality, Greenawalt said the women's movement is far from over.
We've gotten pretty far
but we still have inequalities
even if it's not that apparent
Greenawalt said.
