Women's Basketball: Ohio suffers 'tough loss' to Western Michigan at home

Semeka Randall walked into the press conference with a serious look on her face.

Following a 74-56 loss last night to Western Michigan at The Convo, she said it won't be tough to predict how the season will end if the team continues to play this badly.

We're not growing up quick enough

Randall said. Before you know we'll be calling the dry cleaners to work on next year.

Randall was not just talking about the younger players on the team, either.

Junior guards Jennifer Bushby and Jenny Poff scored a combined 12 points, all of which came in the second half.

Poff did not hit a single 3-pointer in the game, and Bushby made Ohio's only two 3-pointers.

Senior guard Lauren Hmiel didn't play in the first half because she violated team rules. The Bobcats weren't in too much trouble without her, only down 31-25 at halftime.

Ohio, however, still didn't look comfortable on the floor without Hmiel.

Randall said that it was rough without Hmiel in the first half, but she had to show discipline.

I'm a big believer in you've got to follow the rules she said. She had to definitely pay her dues so to speak in terms of being disciplined.

Still, when Hmiel got on the floor, she couldn't give her team the lift it needed.

Hmiel scored only two points, one assist and three rebounds in the 19 minutes she played.

She admitted that she was a bit out of sync on the floor.

I was trying to do something good

Hmiel said, but I couldn't. I was always a step short.

Ohio was also outrebounded by the Broncos, 40-32. Western Michigan got 18 offensive rebounds, which were converted into 20 points.

Sophomore Kamille Buckner mentioned that not everybody on the floor was crashing the boards.

It's just something we need to work

she said, all five people rebounding. It'll be like only

three people rebounding

and the other (team's player) will get the ball).

Buckner also talked about getting beat on the weak side of their 2-3 Zone for rebounds.

And that's not all the zone failed to do.

It wasn't very effective against the Broncos' Tiera DeLaHoussaye. The senior point was able to drive with the ball wherever she wanted.

(DeLaHoussaye) dribbled right through our zone

Randall said. It was like Swiss cheese at several points of the game.

Hmiel admitted that there were not a lot of positives to take away from this loss.

It was a tough loss

she said. This game was obviously not a good game for us at all.
