Wrestling: Bobcats' weekend loss 'embarrassing'

Clay Tucker was embarrassed with the way Ohio wrestled on Saturday at West Virginia.

The Bobcats lost to West Virginia 37-9 on Saturday. It was the follow-up to a 29-6 loss to Kent State Friday night.

Ohio lost big both nights, but the way they lost was completely different.

On Friday at Kent State, Ohio lost a few close matches that could have made the dual a lot closer. Chris Iammarino (197 pounds) lost 2-1 to Eric Chine in an overtime match that was decided by a tiebreaker.

Germane Lindsey (141 pounds) lost 5-2 to No. 12 Drew Lashaway, who has already defeated the reigning national champion.

After the match coach Joel Greenlee and Tucker both said they thought Ohio wrestled hard.

Following the loss to West Virginia that was certainly not the case.

Quite frankly

it was embarrassing Greenlee said. We got outwrestled. We got outcoached.

We weren't even in the damn thing.

The Bobcats lost four matches by pin fall and another by major decision. Tucker (157 pounds) won his match but wasn't happy with the way anyone wrestled.

It was just pretty embarrassing the way we wrestled tonight, Tucker said. Not only the guys who lost, but even the guys that won didn't wrestle up to par.

Jacob Ison (197 pounds) had to forfeit his match because of an injury. He said guys just weren't pumped up to wrestle.

I was ready to go, I wish I could have had that in a couple other guys, Ison said. But you can only worry about yourself.

The Bobcats traveled from Kent State to West Virginia because they had back-to-back meets

but none of them were blaming their sluggish performance on that.

I wouldn't make any excuses, Tucker said. Everybody knows how to wrestle two days in a row.

Erik Schuth (184 pounds) and Quentin Keyes (133 pounds) were two wrestlers that lost to ranked opponents against Kent State but were able to come out and win against West Virginia.

Keyes lost 6-1 to No. 17 Dan Mitcheff but then bounced back to defeat Tyler Oravec 7-4.

Schuth lost 16-8 to No. 5 Dustin Kilgore on Friday. He earned a 3-1 decision over Lance Bryson

but also wasn't satisfied with his team's performance.

We just had a bad weekend, Schuth said. We were definitely sluggish, but there's no reason why we should have been.",",2,Sports,Joe Ragazzo,27094a.jpg,Ohio's Clay Tucker grapples with Buffalo's John-Martin Cannon during the Bobcats' 19-15 win over the Bulls Jan. 25 at The Convo.
