Backtalk: Wrestler discusses off-season training, rap career, style

Quentin Keyes is the 133-pound starter for the wrestling team. Ohio received no automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament, but Keyes is holding out hope he'll get an at-large bid when they are announced tomorrow.

The Post: If you don't get an at-large bid, when do you start off-season training?

Quentin Keyes: The off-season starts a week after the national tournament. We change our whole training regiment to freestyle wrestling. Freestyle is a slightly different style of wrestling. You can lock hands; take downs are only worth a point, stuff like that. Freestyle wrestling is what they use in the Olympics, and that's what we train for. America is the only country on the planet that has collegiate wrestling like what we do.

Post: Spring Quarter is coming up. That means a lot of parties. What fest are you looking forward to the most?

Keyes: That's a tough one. I think maybe Mill Fest because we have a wrestling house on Mill, and that's kind of a given. I'm kind of going to be there, and I'm kind of going to get access to free stuff. You know, free drinks. I'm 21.

Post: NBA playoffs are coming up. You're from Cleveland. Give an NBA Finals prediction.

Keyes: It's going to be the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers without (Andrew) Bynum, so we are going to win that one. I can see it going five games. I can't see a sweep.

Post: Talk about your rap career.

Keyes: I've been rapping forever, but I've been actually recording since ninth grade, like actually laying down tracks. A lot of people you run into are like, 'I'm a rapper, want to hear me spit something?' But you're not a rapper unless you've got tracks recorded, you can record songs, put hooks in, put verses in. I do the whole thing. I have a couple CDs out now. You can check them out at www.jamwave.com/Qkeyes or www.jamwave.com/younghustlas.

Post: You seem to have a unique style. How would you describe it?

Keyes: I'm not trying to sound cocky, but I definitely have the most swagger on the Ohio wrestling team. My swagger is different. It's more of a Pharrell-type, Clipse-type swagger because I wear a lot of Bape clothing, a lot of Ice Creams's. Bape hoodies, stuff like that. Lil' Wayne wears a lot of Bape hoodies, stuff like that. That's more my style. I don't usually wear a lot of earth tones. I wear kind of like bright colors, loud colors. It's kind of flashy, but not too out there. I express myself through my clothing.
