The Bobcats plated two runs in the top of the ninth inning yesterday, but it didn't matter.
Ohio lost to Tennessee 10-2 and all four games of the weekend series against the Vols in Knoxville, Tenn.
Tennessee is a very talented team
coach Joe Carbone said. We won't face a team as good as them the rest of the year. They have a really good pitching staff and they really swing the bats.
The Volunteers (6-5) struck early and often throughout the series, as was the case yesterday afternoon.
Tennessee scored runs in the first, second and third innings off of Ohio starter Bryce Butt to take a 6-0 lead.
Adam Goodpasture and Matt Schlarb combined for four innings of relief after Butt left, allowing four more runs.
They hit the hell out of us Carbone said. They were just better than us.
The Bobcats (2-7) came up empty against Tennessee starter Stephen McCray. McCray shut Ohio out through five innings pitched allowing only four hits.
With one out in the ninth, Robert Maddox III started a Bobcat rally with a walk. Hayden Johnston, Jerod Yakubik and Trace Voshell followed Maddox with three-straight singles to drive him in. Chris Klimko followed with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to drive in the final run for the Bobcats.
Our guys hung in there pretty good Carbone said. We had some guys come up there and do some good things. We're a better team from playing Tennessee.
The Bobcats were hurt by injuries in the series.
Bobby Martin missed the games against the Vols due to a concussion sustained during the Pittsburgh game on Wednesday.
Ohio was without its hottest hitter, Gauntlett Eldemire for the final three games of the series. The sophomore left the first game with a pulled hamstring after an RBI single. Eldemire was leading the team in batting with a .429 average.
We weren't 100 percent healthy
Carbone said. And when we're not 100 percent healthy we're not going to have much of a chance to beat them.
Pitching was a problem for the Bobcats from game one on Friday. Ohio lost the game 12-2. Starter Chris Rigo gave up seven runs with eight strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings on the mound. Marc Krauss drove in one of the Bobcats two runs with a single.
Krauss again led the way for the Bobcats in their double header on Saturday. The junior hit a home run in each game and drove in four runs for the day. Zach Elmer took the loss in game one giving up six runs in two and two-thirds innings pitched.
Zach Fairbanks picked up the loss in game two allowing three runs in three innings pitched. Ohio lost game one 8-6 and game two 13-6.
