Former coach involved in car wreck, faces misdemeanor charges

A former Ohio University assistant softball coach was charged with three misdemeanors after allegedly hitting a parked car on East Carpenter Street and colliding with another on East State Street at around 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

When Athens Police Officer Jeremy Emerick arrived at the scene, Ashley E. Moore's Jeep Grand Cherokee had flipped and she was hanging halfway outside of the window, he said.

The three Ohio University students in the Toyota Camery that she allegedly hit did not have to go to the hospital, even though the collision completely smashed the hood, he added.

My first thought was someone had to be seriously injured or even deceased based on the damage

Emerick said.

Moore was taken to O'Bleness, where she was then life-flighted to Grant Medical Center in Columbus. She has since been released and will appear before the Athens Municipal Court on Friday, March 20.

She was charged with driving under the influence, reckless operation and leaving the scene of an accident, Emerick said.

She was lucky said Lt. Dave Williams. I've never seen such a bad wreck with so many people coming out ok.

The passengers in the Toyota Camry told Emerick that they were driving about 25 - 30 miles per hour when Moore's Jeep went left of center and collided with their car.

Witnesses alleged that Moore was driving about 50 miles per hour, he added.

The police department had received several complaint calls about her driving before the crash on East State Street, Emerick said.

Witnesses saw her swipe a parked Chrysler Pacifica on East Carpenter Street after swerving to avoid hitting an oncoming vehicle from the other direction, according to police reports.

Moore was hired as the assistant softball coach with a salary of $36,628 per year in the beginning of September. Though her termination was finalized yesterday, Head Coach Jodi Hermanek initiated the process before the incidents on Friday, said Jason Corriher, Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations.
