Golf: Rain cuts short Bobcats' loss to Camels

The Bobcats' spring break ended like many other Ohio students' - with rain.

Ohio's match with Campbell was cut short with only a few holes left because of severe weather. The Bobcats fell to the Camels by six strokes, with Ohio ending 13 strokes over par.

The team had to play seven holes in the difficult conditions. It just became impossible to play, according to coach Bob Cooley.

It was all perfectly fine until about an hour before we had to call it quits

Cooley said. It had a big effect on our play until the match had to be called.

The golfers, however, said the rain wasn't a factor.

Seniors James Ellis and Chad Warmbein shot a one over par during the rain.

Freshman John Mlynarski, who finished three over par, said the rain had some benefits.

I've always found it not that bad to play in the rain Mlynarski said. It makes me slow my performance down a little bit and think through my shots more.

Before Friday's match with Campbell, the Bobcats got the chance to play in some great conditions at various golf courses in Pinehurst, N.C.

With the team having the week off from school, the golfers had a surplus of time to work on their game. They also were able to have some quality practices.

We definitely got a lot out of it Ellis said. It's just too bad it didn't last until our match was over Saturday.

Mlynarski offered similar thoughts about the trip.

We have such a disadvantage since we're from the north

Mlynarski said. Down here

we got to play in shorts everyday and could golf from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with no problems.

The Bobcats used the break and their match with Campbell to get back in a rhythm after having a few weeks off since their last tournament. Ohio will play in its next tournament this upcoming weekend in the Marshall Invitational.

I can say we had a great week of play down here

Cooley said. The guys showed a huge amount of progress during their spring break.

The women had no such weather problems during their spring break.

The Bobcats finished in 15th place, shooting 121 over par in the two-day, 17-team Cincinnati Spring Invitational in Crystal River, Fla.

Sophomore Erin Cahill was Ohio's top finisher. She finished in a tie for 54th place with a 30 over par.
