Judge sets $1 million bond for man indicted for burning car death

A county judge set bond at $1 million yesterday for a local man who prosecutors say killed a woman and burned her body.

Judge L. Alan Goldsberry set bond for Steven N. Dougan, 27, of Shade, in a hearing that lasted less than 10 minutes.

Investigators say Dougan killed Crystal King, 27, and left her body in a burning car near Chase Road.

County Prosecutor C. David Warren asked for the $1 million bond, noting Dougan could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted. Asked by Goldsberry what he thought of the bond request, Dougan's attorney, K. Robert Toy, had no comment.

You're a man of few words today

Mr. Toy Goldsberry said dryly. (It) makes me nervous when you're not talking much.

Toy said he might not represent Dougan much longer and requested an application for a public defender. Asked why he might leave the case, Toy said he couldn't comment on that, either.

A grand jury indicted Dougan last month for murder, felony murder, aggravated arson, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. He remains in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.
