Softball: Bobcats lose heartbreaker to heavily-favored Michigan

The Bobcats had a rough weekend as they dropped all four of their games against Bradley, Tennessee Tech, and No. 8 ranked Michigan in the University of Louisville Tournament.

Despite losing their first three games, the Bobcats did not back down from the Wolverines.

They held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning before Michigan scored two runs to go ahead 3-2 to avoid the Bobcats' upset bid.

The team showed that it wasn't going to back down with, in its very first at-bat against 2008 All-American pitcher Nikki Nemitz of Michigan when freshman shortstop Alexis Zambrana started things off with a double.

After catcher Jordan Paden singled starting pitcher Emily Wethington scored Zambrana with a groundout to give Ohio a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats continued to pitch and defend well going into the sixth inning as Wethington had already collected five strikeouts.

Zambrana scored the team's second run after she walked and sophomore Melissa Bonner drove her in with a double to left field.

The Bobcats lead would disappear in the bottom of the sixth, however. Michigan's Roya St. Clair hit a two-run home run to put the Wolverines up 3-2.

In the top of the seventh, the Bobcats' final shot at a win came up short. Zambrana hit a one-out walk to give the Bobcats the tying run on base with the middle of the lineup coming up.

But Michigan went on to record the final two outs to avoid the Bobcats' attempt at the upset.

Wethington only allowed five hits to the Wolverine's lineup, but it wasn't enough to earn the victory.

The Bobcats' other three games of the University of Louisville tournament were not as heart-breaking as the Michigan loss, but did not go in the Bobcats' favor as they fell to Bradley 6-0, Friday and 7-2, yesterday, to go along with a 8-1 loss to Tennessee Tech.
