Track and field: Allen hopes to end indoor season with a bang

Bahiyjaui Allen is ready for one last throw for the indoor season.

Allen is heading to College Station, Texas, to compete in the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships tomorrow.

The junior currently ranks 16th in the nation in the shot put after her school-record throw of 52-7.50 (16.04 meters) at the Mid-American Conference Championships.

To have Bahiyjaui and representation at Nationals is big

coach Clay Calkins said. What she's capable of doing there really is nothing holding her back. At the big competitions she has produced in the past.

Hopefully, that will hold true at Nationals.

Allen will be competing against the nation's best throwers in the shot put.

The top thrower is Mariam Kevkhishvili from Florida University. The junior's throw of 17.94 meters is the mark at the top.

The nation's No. 4 through No.17 throwers all have season-best throws in the 16-meter range

well within Allen's striking distance. Allen is not getting caught up in the numbers or the throwers around her

though.

I honestly don't look at the competition, Allen said. I figure I do the best that I can do, and I won.

I feel like if I do better than the best I can do

nobody can beat me.

National competition is nothing new to Allen. Last spring

Allen went to the Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the shot put.

Her throw was good for 27th place.

This year

Allen has a particular goal in mind.

I'm going to go out and try to throw my best, she said. But I would like to see myself go out and throw 17 meters.

Allen also has a particular thrower she would like to beat.

I do know that Nia [Henderson of Kent State] is ranked seventh, Allen said. I threw a throw that I think could have beaten her. I'm looking to do what I know I can do and get better.
