Track and Field: Runners break school records, NCAA provisional mark

Now the waiting begins.

Kari Summers and Annie Beecham finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run in the Alex Wilson Invitational Friday, surpassing the NCAA provisional mark for the national meet next week.

Summers set the school record of 16:32.72, which broke her previous mark of 16:51.05, which she set last week. Beecham was close behind at 16:33.58, both easily hitting the NCAA's provisional mark of 16:45.

It was a phenomenal job

coach Clay Calkins said. They both broke the school record by over 20 seconds and hit the provisional mark.

They will now wait to see if their times are good enough to qualify for next week's NCAA Indoor Championships. Only the top 16 provisional times in the nation will receive bids.

There's no guarantee Calkins said. They're on the list of provisional times and we'll find out [in the next few days].

The NCAA has not yet released the names of the participants of the meet next weekend, but is expected to early this week.

Summers and Beecham are not the only Bobcat athletes who have to wait, however, as junior shot putter Bahiyjuai Allen, who didn't compete Friday, also surpassed the NCAA provisional mark for shot put earlier in the season.

Allen's mark of 52-7.50 meters was 14th in the nation heading into last weekend, when there were four last-chance meets around the nation to qualify for this week's meet.

In the mean time, there is nothing to do but wait.

It was a phenomenal race

Calkins said. [It was] a great job for the girls and the school.
