Although many people in Athens do their part to spread the word about environmentalism, Amethystone is one of the first local bands to incorporate it into its music.
Originating three years ago, Athens-based band Amethystone is a self-proclaimed eco-fem rock band that comprises pianist and vocalist Megan Cameron, drummer Daniel West, bassist Michael Riggins and guitarist Rob Powell.
Music truly brought this group together, as it was the reason Cameron and Riggins first met in 2003.
Mike is a recording engineer
and he recorded my solo CD and then we started dating and now we're married
Cameron said.
In 2004 the duo went on a tour, only playing piano and bass. While they enjoyed that sound, they were eager to fill out an entire band. After Powell joined the band, West joined in 2007 as their third drummer and the current lineup was complete.
I think we are all pretty different as artists
Cameron said. All my stuff is singer/songwriter
Mike brings this funky sound with definitely more rock elements
and Rob is 'The Edge.'
As a rhythm guitarist, Powell said he pays close attention to what he needs to bring to a song to make it shine and evoke energy.
Although the other members of the band do their part to contribute musically, Cameron is the sole songwriter and focuses on writing songs about what is most important to her, especially Mother Earth.
There is a theme running through our songs of eco-consciousness
our connection to the earth and how it can be a place of strength
Cameron said.
But some of the songs are about political commentary and not so much about the environment
necessarily. One song
'Slow Down
